SUPERCRITICAL CARBON DIOXIDE PROCESSING OF NANO CLAYS ANDPOLYMER/CLAY NANOCOMPOSITESbyMIHAI MANITIUAugust 2010Advisor: Rangaramanujam KannanCo-Advisor: Esin GulariMajor: Chemical EngineeringDegree: Doctor of Philosophy Effective dispersion of the fillers in a polymer matrix and improvement of polymer clayinteractions are two key challenges in the field of nanocomposites. A novel processing methodthat utilizes the unique properties of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) to disperse nano clayand prepare a series of polymer/clay nanocomposites with enhanced properties was explored.Significant dispersion was achieved using the scCO2 process with Cloisite 10A withoutthe presence of an organic phase as evident by the absence of the diffraction peak in WAXD andthe presence of individual tactoids that lost their parallel registry. The expanded flexible structureof the scCO2 processed clay exposes more of the available surface area allowing for morecontact between the polymer and clay surface, and the platelets should be easier to disperse intoa polymer matrix than the “as received” clay.Enhanced nano clay dispersion and improved properties were achieved in the scCO2processed polystyrene/clay nanocomposites compared to melt compounding and solutionblended benchmarks. There was a three-fold reduction in the number of tactoids in the scCO2

متن کاملEffect of Supercritical Co2 on Morphology and Rheology of Polymer Nanocomposites Prepared by Melt Compounding
Well dispersion or intercalation/exfoliation of nanoscale fillers (such as nano-CaCO3 and nano-clay) in polymer matrix is currently not easy to be achieved. Supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO2) has been reported to have great potential for facilitating the dispersion or intercalation/exfoliation of the nanoscale fillers in polymer matrix. So, in this paper, the effects of dissolved ScCO2 on the...
متن کاملNovel Manufacturing Technolory of Polymeric Nanocomposites Using Supercritical Fluid Process
Recently, Supercritical fluids have been used in material synthesis and processing because of their special properties such as high diffusivity, low viscosity, and low surface tension. Supercritical carbon dioxide is the most attractive because it is non-toxic, non-flammable, and has moderate critical temperature and critical pressure. Moreover, and can also swell most polymers. In this study, ...

The development of synthetic bone graft substitutes is an intense area of research due to the complications associated with the harvest of autogenous bone and concerns about the supply of allogenic bone. Porous resorbable polymers have been used extensively in hard tissue engineering applications, but currently lack load-bearing capacity. Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) processing is use...
